A Day trip to remember

Experience Texas Hill Country, the Vintage Way.

Looking for a full-day adventure through the Texas Hill Country? Hop aboard our signature ride — the Hill Country Flyer. Since 1992, this classic excursion has been a favorite for families, friends, and day-trippers looking to experience a unique blend of history, Hill Country views, and small-town charm.

Your journey begins at the Austin Steam Train Association’s Cedar Park Depot and takes you on a 66-mile round trip aboard our beautifully restored vintage train. Along the way, you’ll cross the scenic trestle bridge over the South San Gabriel River and wind through Short Creek Canyon — all from the comfort of a restored historic railcar pulled by a diesel locomotive.

Midway through the trip, enjoy a two-hour layover in the town of Burnet, where you can explore the historic square, browse local shops, and enjoy lunch on your own at one of the local restaurants (reservations are recommended). Then, settle in for a relaxed ride back, soaking in the experience of railroading the way it used to be.

Whether you’re a longtime train enthusiast or simply searching for a meaningful way to spend time with loved ones, the Hill Country Flyer is a moving museum journey you won’t forget.

BurneT Lunch Recommendations

Trailblazer Grille is a local restaurant right on the square! Known for their burgers and homemade meatloaf, most of the passengers on the train go there during lunch. Because of their popularity, making a plan to eat there is a must! Call ahead to make your reservation at 512-756-7636. Just let them know you are on the train, and they will know what to do! If you walk in with no reservation you will likely have a significant wait–if you can get a table at all–and may not have time to shop or watch the Burnet Gunfighters.

There are several restaurants and shops to check out in Burnet Square but if you don’t want to fight the crowds you are welcome to pack a picnic! Your own food and non-alcoholic drinks are welcome on board the train. We love the grassy areas around the Burnet Courthouse in the heart of the town square.
