Behind every smooth, safe ride is a lot of precision work like the wheel-flange reprofiling our crew recently tackled.

Keeping our cars safe and reliable starts long before the train leaves the depot. One of the most common routines of maintenance we perform in the yard is re-profiling worn wheel flanges. Thanks to our Mechanical Foreman, Matt Jackson, and our dedicated volunteers, we can get it done with ease.

Every railroad wheel has an inner flange that rides against the inside edge of the rail. This small but critical feature essentially steers locomotives and cars along the track and prevents derailments. Over time, constant contact between the flange and the gauge side of the rail causes wear. The flange can become too thin, too tall, or lose its precise profile which can reduce its ability to keep the wheel safely guided. Because of this, the Federal Railroad Administration maintains strict standards for flange thickness, height, and shape. Our crew always carefully measures each flange to ensure it stays within those limits.

Once a flange begins to approach out-of-standard condition, it’s time for re-profiling. Rather than sending entire wheelsets away for machining, a process that can take weeks and can sideline car availability, our volunteers and staff handle the restoration on-site using a specialized method. To reshape the flange safely and precisely, the team replaces standard brake shoes with abrasive grinding shoes designed specifically for wheel work. With those in place, we use our locomotive to move the car slowly along the yard tracks. As the car rolls, the grinding shoes shave down high areas of the flange until the profile is within ideal specifications once again. It’s a meticulous, time-consuming process, but one that allows us to keep our consist in service, maintain safety, and minimize downtime for our passengers.

Behind every smooth ride is a lot of unseen dedication and we’re grateful to our team who keeps our wheels perfectly in line. We are able to do precise, regular maintenance like this thanks to the help of our generous supporters. You can help cover the costs of our ongoing work by making a donation!
